Ten Mile Square - Media Technology Brief
Introduction
Fully leveraging and monetizing content and media assets requires the right combination of organizational practices, data organization, and underlying systems. Ten Mile Square has broad experience in these practices, data, and systems for effectively using content and media. This brief describes some of Ten Mile Square’s content and media capabilities and experience, as listed below:
- Findability – Almost every organization has a data findability problem and every organization’s findability problem is unique. Findability typically spans multiple levels of content search; including enterprise search (“find it inside the firewall”), site search (“find it on the website”), and search engine optimization. Good solutions require the right data definition, treatment and tuning and a lightweight / cost-effective approach that does not require the entire asset base to be massaged manually. Usually small steps can make a huge difference – the challenge is in identifying the correct small steps.
- Core Metadata – A cornerstone of content reusability within a media organization is pragmatic standards for commonly used metadata. Good metadata describes all aspects of the asset, and goes way beyond tagging. Ten Mile Square developed core metadata standards for Scripps Networks properties (FoodTV, HGTV, others) that take into account the realities of new and legacy business processes, broadcast video and web content, and the wide variety systems that manipulate and host elements of that content. The core metadata scheme is providing new opportunities for reuse and monetization of Scripps Networks’ content.
- Media System Architecture: A “media asset” is actually a diverse collection of disparate data living in multiple business and media systems. A complete description of an asset requires a view into the descriptive data, contracts, rights & ownership, distribution & use, revenue / costing / ROI, and of course the content itself in as many formats and locations as it exists. Organizations need a set of core architectural functions for media and business systems to interoperate and to manage these complexities. We have developed media architectures and components, including asset registries, repositories, storage, retrieval and federation tools, ingest, ingest, distribution, and other functions. These tools provide an integrated view rather than multiple content “islands” that are not searchable or useful.
- Content Distribution and Commerce Systems – Ten Mile Square has worked with clients to conceptualize, design and develop a variety of content distribution systems. These systems facilitate and automate the various steps involved in content repurposing and distribution. They take into account all aspects of content distribution including asset commissioning, packaging, transmission, payment and accounting systems, tracking and rights management functions.
